Real Jobs You Can Have in Esports at Game On

Updated: Oct 30

When most people think about gaming, they imagine someone playing solo in their bedroom, maybe yelling at the screen or doing that classic victory dance alone.

But at Game On, proudly run by the Intellectual Disability Foundation of St George (IDF), gaming is anything but a lonely hobby. It’s a launchpad for real, exciting careers (and yes, seriously cool jobs) all built around esports and the amazing world of gaming.

More than just jobs, these roles are about smashing stereotypes. “We want to make sure what we do matches what they want and enjoy,” IDF chief executive officer Spiro Pissas said.  “I want them to experience what it’s like to be in a competitive environment – the excitement of training, competing, and even travelling.”

Gaming at Game On isn’t about isolation; it’s about coming together, making friends, and discovering new possibilities.

And it’s not just about winning trophies, though that’s awesome too.

Let’s jump into all the awesome jobs that come with esports because it’s way more than just “playing games”.

Pro Esports Player: The Ultimate Gamer Grind

First up, the obvious one, a pro gamer! But this isn’t just “button mashing” for fun. It’s serious business.

“This is a professional gaming setup here, so you can actually be an esports player,” they say. That means training like a champ, practising teamwork and strategy, and levelling up those skills every day.

The best part? Gaming is one of the few sports where everyone is on equal footing. “Once you’re on the screen, everyone’s equal. It doesn’t matter what ability or disability you have.” No matter who you are, if you’ve got the skills, you’ve got a shot. How cool is that?

The dream? Competing in real tournaments, winning prize money, and maybe even grabbing a spot in the big leagues. (Did you know some Aussies recently won $50,000 each in a League of Legends tournament? Yeah, it’s that real.)

Coach: The Mastermind Behind the Scenes

Great players need great coaches, and we’re building up coaching roles too. “Like any professional team, they need to be coached, and they need to put in the hours,” Spiro said.

But here’s the kicker: we want players to become coaches. Talk about passing the torch!

Coaching means being a leader, strategist and motivator. You get to guide your team to victory, develop game plans, and maybe even become the next esports Yoda. Plus, it’s a legit job that hones your communication and leadership skills, all while doing something you love.

Game Streamer: Your Own Channel, Your Own Show

Not everyone dreams of going pro, and that’s perfectly fine! Streaming is a massive world on its own. At Game On, we’ve got a live streaming booth where you can broadcast your gameplay on YouTube or Twitch, build your own fanbase and get creative.

“We have a screen where we can stream live, and those who want to can create their own channels,” Spiro said. Streaming means chatting with viewers, showing off your skills and building a community of fans who tune in just for you. And yes, some streamers turn this into a money-making gig with sponsorships and donations.

So, if you love being the star of the show (or the life of the party), streaming is your jam.

Content Creator & Editor: The Video Wizard

All that epic gameplay needs to be shared with the world, and that’s where content creators come in.

“You can edit content so you can upload to these platforms,” Spiro said.

If you love making videos, adding cool effects, and crafting highlight reels that get everyone talking, this job is for you. It’s a perfect way to combine a passion for gaming with creative skills, and it’s a booming career in the digital age.

Esports Commentator: The Voice that Hypes the Crowd

Ever notice how commentators make a game way more exciting? Esports has commentators, too! At Game On, you can be the hype voice, breaking down the action, celebrating clutch plays and bringing energy to live matches.

“You can also be a commentator when we do live gaming,” Spiro said. If you love to talk, have great game knowledge and can keep an audience on the edge of their seat, this role puts you right in the spotlight, without having to be the one holding the controller.

So, if you think gaming is just a hobby, think again! At Game On, it’s a way to build careers, friendships, and a future full of possibilities.
